Gosh Darn Gone And Done It

Working towards being a stronger, leaner, better version of me, I decided keto might be a good option and for several weeks I have been changing my eating habits and trying to find the balance between healthy fats, enough calories and protein while eliminating carbs.

In a lot of ways the elimination of carbs was the easy part, as I had long ago given up most foods made with processed white flour due to an allergy to methylated folate. So it has, to this point, been a matter of choosing the right vegetables and cleaner foods, reading labels on the quick to fix meals for one and foregoing those for real food, prepared by me.

Even beverages seemed easy, I gave up sodas and juices for green tea a long time ago and I quite happily discovered that my favorite beer is keto friendly.

However, I was a bit concerned, though I had some symptoms of full acidosis, I did not think that I had achieved it yet, others, that have had great success on the diet told me that they usually had huge cravings for carbs when in acidosis.

Well last night, it became very evident what they were talking about when they said they had huge carb cravings. I woke around midnight and I was starving, I mean really, really ravenous and could only think of the most delicious carbs.

Talk about wrestling with the devil, for the next 2 hours, I struggled between convincing myself it is not time for a cheat day and getting dressed and heading to the Kwik Trip for a yummy pizza, hot dogs, even just bread so I could make a heavenly pbj with a glass of milk, I even ate 3 fat bombs which are usually very satisfying, but to no avail.

My head was screaming and pounding, cold sweats, stomach cramping and burning. But finally around 2 am, after the 3rd fat bomb and a small package of nuts, a glass of ginger tea and 2 glasses of water, I was able to go back to sleep.

But, I made it! Waking this morning, some brain fog and the lowest energy I have had in awhile are making it hard to start the day. But, I stayed strong and I am going to get stronger! Devil himself better duck and cover, because I am going to rock this!

Don't worry it is only kinky the first time you do it.

Congratulations on embarking on a quest to becoming a more fit you. My wife and I have a lot of experience in this area, and I would tell you it is all about portion size and working out, especially at your age (we are older and my wife is a body builder). Our portions in the U.S. are way over the top and the average person here would be shocked at how little they really need to eat. We lived overseas many years and we were always shocked when we came back to the States and saw the huge amount of crap people were eating. So I would tell you eat healthy and very small. At the same time I strongly recommend you embark on a six day a week training program alternating anaerobic and aerobic. You will need to reshape what you have as your reduced food calorie intake kicks in. Also, note that women lose muscle mass at a much faster rate than men after 50 so weight training is critical. And finally, you must be patient. You did not get the way you are overnight and you will not improve overnight either. Stick with it and you will improve. Best of luck! And by the way, stay away from the crazy diets. You can do simple things like use Stevia instead of sugar and they are much more effective in the long term.

Thank you for your comments, support and advice! Agreed, portions are out of control in the U.S., I also believe that our busy lifestyles are a huge factor, we inhale our food in order to get back to being busy, instead of relaxing and enjoying the food and companionship.

I believe that part of what sent me into the acidosis last night was lunch with my daughter, we sat in the restaurant, talking and laughing for over an hour and though my meal was fully keto friendly and she is very physically active, neither one of us was able to clear our plates, but we were satisfied!

Yes, yoga, walking and lifting! Numerous joint issues from past injuries require some modifications, but the strength and stamina are coming back.

That's what did the trick for me. I also cut way back on carbs without eliminating them entirely.

Try eating olives to relieve carb flu.

Good luck.....these situations can be a struggle. Faith working hard, hopefully it will pay off. If nothing else, be healthy and proud of yourself. You're worth more on the inside anyway. SMART CHOICES !!!!!

Best of luck to you. The trick that worked for me was not denying myself completely of something sweet. (I'm a reformed sweets junkie). I've lept my weight off for almost five years. Take care of yourself.

Good luck- shop on the outskirts of the grocery store where items have expiration dates within a month and not the aisles- makes it much easier to find healthier foods.

You're in MN and Cowboy is in WY.
Somehow you must be making that work!

I have tried low/no carb diets in the past but I crave bread. I started making my own with non GMO whole grain flour. It doesn't make bread like store bought but with a lot of butter it satisfies the cravings. Good luck with your endeavor, it takes discipline for sure

I'm so happy that the keto diet seems to be working for you. I've tried and keep falling off the wagon but you've given me the incentive !

Thank you! I found, through talking to others that have been successful and through web research, one of the keys is getting enough fat. About 70 percent of your calories should be fat calories and I think it is starting to work for me because those are the only calories I am counting. The other key is getting enough fiber, I do count net carbs and try to keep them under 20, which helps me with my fiber count too. Oh and lots and lots of water or other no cal fluids.

You're an inspiration to all of us with a spare tire around our waists. Gotta knock off that sugar in the 6 cups of coffee I have every day.

It is a hard diet and hard thing to do when people (relative and fake friends) don't want to listen. Good luck. Chase those demons away for good
