Australia must be really decadent; afterall it is referred to as "down under" quite often. And, the Opel minors must surely be the most decadent of your country. "One Big Sky Covers Us All Equally"

Ah, old Rome......they did know how to party, didn't they. The ancient cultures did know the pleasures of BDSM. All Lots wife wanted was one last look of Sodom and Gomorrah......

I wonder if Ancient Rome was really like that all over or it grew in the telling. Maybe a few famous cases became "the way of ancient Romans". BTW, Caligula is a nickname and means "little sandal" (little caliga).

I quite like the idea of Roman bath slaves... so much so that I used to end my nights on the town in Japan at a Turkish bath. I've revived the practice at my lakeside spa in the mountains, except that there's much more planning involved now. Ah for the good old days.

Interesting thought that - and it does roll huge in my inner-desire pysche as there is one element then that is disallowable now ....... the eunuch. My state of mind is such that I like dressing as a woman, yet the concept of being taken my a man is somewhat repulsive to me. I have had many strange day-dreams of having my tackle removed so I am neither male of female, and as such can only give rather than receive. Supposedly the Romans did this to certain men to provide loyal guards for their women who wouldn't take advantage, but what if they were good lickers ? Old Smallus Dickus wouldn't be happy if his court eunuch pleasured his lady with his tongue so much better than he did with his appendage. As you say, very hedonistic days but think the other way and films such as "Logan's Run" set deep in the future where sex was entirely for recreation and drunken, drug-induced orgies were a normal Saturday night out. Lots to think of, but society today seems to have flushed out the hedonism of Rome ...... perhaps for a good reason, perhaps not. D xxx Carpe Diem - the past is history, and the future is bleak.

I never saw the movie but I believe it is also true that many of the "known" stars of the movie had no idea that it was essentially a mainstream porn film. The scripts they were sent during casting merely referred to orgies going on in the background while they gave their best sShakespearian declamations. Some didn't even realise until the first screening! I believe the money was quite good! Debauchery, hedonism and other sybaritic indulges has been with us since there was first a power structure. I think the Romans just pushed the limits that little bit further!

Ms Mirren had a reputation as a bit of a party girl herself! I know you're right about M McD! Just found this on the Wik-thing: "Guccione hired screenwriter Gore Vidal to draft the film's script and Tinto Brass to direct the film. Brass extensively altered Vidal's original screenplay, leading Vidal to disavow the film. The final screenplay focuses on the idea that "absolute power corrupts absolutely". However, both Brass and Vidal disagreed over Guccione's use of unsimulated sexual content, which Brass refused to film. Because the producers did not allow Brass to edit the film, they changed its tone and style significantly and added hardcore sex scenes not filmed by Brass, thus turning Caligula into a pornographic drama that disregarded the director's intentions to present the film as a political satire. As a result, Brass also disavowed the film." Guccione knew what he was making; he just tried to dress it up as a class-act to attract the big names!
